The Tehama County Department of Animal Services arrested William Thomas Cox, 23, of Cottonwood for possessing 51 gamecocks with the intent to fight them and for possessing seven gaffs and one short knife.

Animal Services had received a tip from Butte County Animal Control that Cox had recently been arrested for cockfighting in that county. When officers arrived at the Cottonwood location, Cox gave them permission to search his premises.

Personnel impounded two roosters and took them to the Tehama County Animal Care Center. The remaining 49 were left on the property where Cox will have to continue to care for them until the outcome of his trial. He was released at the scene pending an Aug. 22, court date, according to K. "Beau" Beauregard.
