A 35-year-old North Jacksonville woman was arrested on Oct 30 on an animal cruelty charge after an autopsy found that a pit bull terrier discovered dead at her home a week earlier was emaciated and malnourished.

Shannon Devon Wright was arrested at her home in the 1900 block of Lambert Street and was being held on $1,500 bail pending a court hearing Nov. 22, police said.

A city Animal Care and Control autopsy report released on Oct 30 said the dog's cause of death was "most probably due to hypovolemic shock and subsequent organ failure." Hypovolemic shock is when there is multiple organ failure caused by rapid fluid loss.

Acting on a tip, an officer went to the home Oct. 23 and found the dead dog in a crate next to an empty bowl with what looked like fecal matter and dirt in it. The dog's rib cage was visible "as if the animal had not been fed regularly," according to the police report.
