Police in Fairhope are searching for the owner of a dog they say was left abandoned in a home for nearly a month without food or water. The dog was discovered in a house on Red Barn Road off of County Road 33 just southeast of the Fairhope city limits.
Animal rescuers at The Haven have named the dog "Tobie." He was picked up about a week ago. Fairhope Animal Control Officer Jerry Merchant says Tobie was abandoned by his owner and left inside the home without food or water: "We had a complaint call that the owners hadn't been there in about three weeks. We entered the house and found the dog there."
Tobie, who is around 18-months-old, weighs thirty five pounds. Animal control agents say that's about half of what a dog his frame size should weigh. The dog is so malnourished, the director of The Haven Animal Shelter where Tobie is now being cared for is able to put his hands around Tobie's waist and touch his fingers together. Mike Graham looks at the dog and tells us: "It's going to be very expensive to care for this dog. He will have to have a lot of medical attention and a heart worm test."
Once Tobie is nursed back to health by volunteers at The Haven, he will be available for adoption. Meanwhile, police are looking for his owner who faces criminal animal neglect charges. If convicted, police say the owner faces up to a year in jail and fines of up to $1,000.
If you would like to make a donation to help "Tobie," along with other animals receiving care at The Haven, you can call the animal shelter at (251) 929-3980. Your contributions are tax deductible.
