Misty Newton said she loves animals and always has tried to do the right thing.
That's why she said she adopted and tried to take care of the two sickly, emaciated horses at the center of animal cruelty charges against the 25-year-old mother of five.
"I loved those horses. I took care of those horses and I want them back," Newton said, adding that her attorney is looking into legal avenues to get the animals back.
The incident leading to the seizure of Pina and Baby occurred July 15 when Indiana State Police Detective Jennifer McDonald noticed two horses running around unsecured, a news release from Indiana State Police said.
Detectives checked on the horses the next day, then returned two weeks later and seized them after determining the animals' health was not improving, the release said.
Newton said the horses were in bad shape when she adopted them from two acquaintances.
She said she has done everything she could to take care of the animals. She built a fence on the property so they could graze, bought 300 pounds of horse feed, apples and carrots, and called the veterinarian when needed.
She had the horses shoed, built a lean-to for shade and had their hooves trimmed. "What do they expect in two weeks from such sick animals," Newton said.
One horse was doing well and the other, the one in the worst condition, was improving at the time of the seizure, she said.
Sandy Bennet, Newton's mother, said her daughter is a born animal lover, saying she always was bringing home strays. Anyone who would accuse her of animal cruelty doesn't know her at all, she said.
"I don't understand it," she said.
Newton said she wants her horses back and so do her five children. She also wants her reputation as a responsible animal lover restored.
"You try to do the right thing and look how it turns out," she said. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
