A 30-year-old West Bend man was arrested on the afternoon of Aug 2 and charged with mistreatment of animals after abandoning his 6-year-old black lab in the apartment he had been evicted from several days prior.

According to Lt. Dave Rettler, a shift commander with the West Bend Police Department, the suspect had been evicted from the apartment in a complex in the 1900 block of Salisbury Road several days ago and had left the dog and some of his personal belongings behind. Temperatures soared near 100 degrees on those days.

Another tenant ultimately notified authorities on the afternoon of Aug 2, Rettler said, and officers found the dog had no food or water.

The animal was first taken to the Washington County Humane Society, but was in such poor condition that it was taken to the Parkdale Animal Hospital in West Bend for treatment.

The condition of the animal was not available prior to the Daily News deadline.

The suspect was arrested later Aug 2 and taken to jail, pending a court appearance on Aug 3.
