A Baxter couple got arrested on July 2 after allegedly leaving a puppy dog locked in the trunk of a car in a store parking lot.

But William Vincent Dunn, 32, of Cookeville Boat Dock Road, and Misty Jean Langford, 24, of 1st Ave. North, Baxter, were charged with more than cruelty to animals, according to warrants on file in the case.

When police arrived to investigate a report of the dog being locked inside the trunk on a very hot day, they allegedly found illegal drugs in the possession of Dunn and Langford.

Cookeville Police Officer Ryan Acuff went to the Wal-Mart store parking lot to investigate a report about the dog and said he found "a puppy locked in the trunk of a 2006 Toyota Corolla which was parked near the store entrance."

The officer notes in the warrant that he could hear the puppy yelping inside the trunk.

"The temperature on the bank said 93 degrees," the warrant says.

Officer Acuff forced the car's door open and opened the trunk. He found "a small puppy about two months old" and determined it had been in the trunk for at least one hour," the warrant says.

Allegedly, William Vincent Dunn admitted he had put the puppy into the trunk.

As the officer continued to investigate, he searched the car and allegedly found three bags of a "white substance" which field tested positive as cocaine and which was "packaged for resale," one warrant says.

The officer estimated the quantity of cocaine at over five grams.

He also allegedly found three marijuana cigarettes.

Officer Acuff charged Dunn and Langford with possession of cocaine for resale, simple possession of marijuana, and cruelty to animals.

In placing the cruelty charge, the officer detailed the offense as "transporting or confining an animal in a cruel manner."

The two were booked into the Putnam jail. Their bond was set at a total of $11,500 each.

They are set to appear in General Sessions Court on July 17.
