A Los Angeles Superior Court Judge sentenced the owner of a dog to 90 days in jail after his conviction on animal abuse charges.

Douglas Craig, 36, of South Los Angeles, pleaded no contest to one count of animal cruelty and was sentenced by Judge Nancy Gast to 90 days in jail and 36 months probation. In addition, he was ordered to forfeit the animal and to attend an animal cruelty counseling program.

The case was prosecuted by the City Attorneys Animal Protection Unit, which received the case following an investigation by staff at the South Los Angeles Animal Services Center.

On Dec. 12, 2005, Animal Services Center personnel responded to a call from a neighbor that an injured animal was being maintained with no food or water at a South Los Angeles home. Neighbors reported they had not seen the owner since Dec. 4, 2005.

Investigators found a tan and white female Staffordshire terrier mix tied by a choke chain to a four foot tether in the back yard with no access to food, water or shelter. The choke chain had dug into the animals neck resulting in an infection. Craig later admitted to investigators that he had left the animal in the backyard with only a small bowl of food prior to taking a two-week vacation.

The animal was taken into custody and treated for the infection, malnutrition and dehydration. By Dec. 19, the animal was in good condition and healing from its wounds. The case was referred to Deputy City Attorney Jennifer Resnik of Delgadillos Animal Protection Unit for prosecution.
