100+ animals seized from home
Pontoon Beach, IL (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jun 28, 2000
County: Madison

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Richard S. Robbins

More than 100 animal were seized at the home of Richard Robbins, 40, of Pontoon
Beach. Earlier this month Robbins was charged with failure to provide humane care and treatment for the animals, to provide food, water and to dispose of dead animals.

The Humane Society found dogs, cats, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, ferrets, chinchillas, guinea pigs and other assorted animals when they entered Robbins' home. "There was a baby deer in his living room."

The home was found to be filthy, floors were filled with animal feces. The inspectors found the carcasses of two pigs in the yard when they made an earlier visit.

The Illinois Animal Welfare Division said Robbins did not have a license to breed animals. The State law requires anyone breeding more than five female dogs to be certified.

If Robbins is convicted, he could be sentenced to 10 days in jail, fined $1,500 for each charge.

The humane society has been forced to close due to the increase of over 100 animals to their facility. Some of the animals will be put up for adoption. The shelter needs donations to fund the animals' medical care adn to buy special food.
