The Van Zandt County Sheriffs Department will pursue animal cruelty charges on a case brought to their attention Thursday afternoon, after a horse was found starving to death on property near Wills Point.

The 2-year-old stud horse was taken to a local veterinary clinic, upon request by the Van Zandt County Sheriffs Department, and after observation was euthanized.

The horse appeared extremely weak, and was skin and bones.

Lone Star Equine Rescue Habitat For Horses Equine Investigator Debbie Lavalle said she received a report on the starving horse Thursday morning and contacted the sheriffs department about the complaint.

Lavalle said she received a report last year on the same owners about abuse of horses; however by the time Lavalle made it to the property all of the horses had been removed.

Although no formal charges had been filed, as of press time on the afternoon of June 8, Van Zandt County Sheriffs Deputy Raymond Keener said an investigation has begun on the owner of the horse and criminal charges expect to be filed.
