Three young children tortured and killed three kittens by hurling them into a creek and against a concrete wall, according to Durant Police.

Patrolman Brian Petree was dispatched on the evening of June 4 to a home in the 1000 block of North Sixth Avenue about an animal-cruelty incident.

The residents told Petree that they found their 9-month-old kittens in a wooded area near the home. According to the report, one kitten was hanging from a tree. Another had been impaled through its stomach with a stick that was wedged between two tree branches. A third kitten was found pinned underneath a tree branch police said was used to beat the feline.

The kitten owners knew the suspects, ages, 5, 6 and 7, according to police, and Petree was told the children had been seen torturing dogs and cats before.

Petree talked to the boys and asked to speak with their mother. The mother came out and Petree told her about the investigation. The report stated that the mother told her boys to be honest with Petree.

According to police, the boys admitted to throwing the kittens in the creek, against a concrete wall and beating and killing them.

Petree told the mother a report would be turned over to Child Welfare Services. According to the report, the mother said her boys need counseling and that one had pulled a knife during a fit of rage. She expressed concern that her children need help before they become old enough to be charged with crimes.

The mother said her children had been abused in the past and were taken away from her while she was completing treatment for methamphetamine addiction.

Durant Police Lt. Johnny Rutherford said the case will be referred to juvenile services but that under state law, children under 7 cannot be held responsible for their actions, so only the 7-year-old could possibly face juvenile charges.
