8 puppies found dead in freezer Tucson, AZ (US)Incident Date: Thursday, May 18, 2006 County: Pima
Disposition: Not Charged
Person of Interest: James D. Reynolds
When Counter Narcotics Alliance officers followed up on a tip Thursday about drug activity at an East Side home, they found what they were looking for but they also found eight puppies dead in a freezer. Working from a tip from 88-CRIME, CNA officers served a search warrant on a home in the 400 block of North Gollob Road, near East Broadway and North Camino Seco, said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a Tucson Police Department spokesman. In the residence, they found that three of the five bedrooms and one of two bathrooms had been set up as "grow rooms" for marijuana, said Sgt. Mark Morlock of the CNA. CNA detectives found 30 plants in various stages of growth, worth approximately $1,000 each, he said.
Police arrested Jason D. Reynolds, 35, Robinson said. He was booked Thursday night into the Pima County jail on suspicion of unlawful production of marijuana, unlawful production of marijuana for sale and possession of narcotics paraphernalia. He has since been released from jail, Robinson said. He said Reynolds had a felony warrant from another state for the same type of drug activity. Additional arrests are expected, Morlock said.
During the search, he said, detectives came across the eight dead puppies in a freezer.
Police learned later that the puppies were stillborn, but could not explain why they were kept in a freezer, Robinson said. Also in the home were 11 dogs and two kittens that had no water, he said. It appeared that a dog boarding or training program was operating out of the house, Morlock said. Detectives are working with the Animal Cruelty Taskforce of Southern Arizona to investigate. All but one dog was handed over to the Pima Animal Care Center, Morlock said. That dog was returned to its owner, who happened to arrive at the home. References |
