A Ruston woman faces criminal charges after the city's animal control department and the Humane Society checked out a home and found a menagerie of animals living in their own filth.

Ruston police said animal control officers went to the house after getting a complaint and found animals living in "extremely horrible conditions." "The ammonia smell was so strong it burned the officers' eyes and took their breath away," Lt. Curtis Hawkins said.

Authorities contacted the homeowner and she admitted she had numerous animals that had not been vaccinated for rabies, police said today. Animal Control Officers gave Julie Hurndon Alexander, 38, until May 1 to have all of the animal's vaccinations current.

Officers returned to the home last week and found 25 dogs, three cats, two parakeets, a chicken, a chick, a hermit crab, a guinea pig, a chinchilla, a gerbil, a duck, two rabbits, two frogs, a hedge hog, four turtles and four fish located at the residence. All were living in horrible conditions, they said. Alexander was issued a citation for 50 counts of cruelty to animals and 50 counts of unsanitary conditions.
