Durant Animal Control took several cats from a home environment they say is a health risk to the owner and a nuisance to the neighborhood.
Next-door neighbors first noticed a stench coming from Ruby Bushs home about three months ago and while inspecting a complaint on May 15, Durant authorities found 50 cats living inside her home. There is no maximum number of pets allowed per home in Durant, but city officials say having that many animals violates a city ordinance on nuisance.
Acting out of protection for the owner and immediate neighbors, animal control took twenty cats from the property. Ruby Bush told First News that more than anything; she just wants to see her cats have a good home. That is why the Durant Animal Control Office is taking the animals to the shelter where they will be put up for adoption. Police plan on going back to Ms. Bushs home Tuesday to retrieve more felines, but they say as long as the owner cooperates in handing them over, they will not issue a citation.
