Two men were shot dead on May 13, 2006 at an illegal cockfight in a rural part of the county.
The rest of the men at the cockfight fled after two gunmen started shooting. At least one managed to call 9-1-1 on his cell phone, Starr County Sheriff Rey Guerra said. The shooting happened on a farm on Hernandez Road at 11 p.m.
Braulio Ramirez, 26, and Juan Manuel Salas, 24, were regulars at cockfights on the farm where they were found dead, Guerra said.
One witness told investigators that the gunmen were wearing ski masks, Guerra said. Other witnesses told investigators the gunmen were not wearing ski masks, he said. Sheriffs deputies used cell phones they found on the farm to track down witnesses. No weapons were recovered, Guerra said.
Guerra would not discuss whether the shootings might be gang or drug related. "I am not at liberty to say that," Guerra said. "At this point in time there is very little information I can share." Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
