A Redondo Beach man has been sentenced to jail and ordered to receive psychological counseling after pleading guilty to charges he picked up and slammed a Chihuahua into the ground in Echo Park.

The Chihuahua and its owner were walking in Echo Park on April 6, 2006, when they were approached by Daryll Raye Hunter, 25. Hunter asked for the time, and following a brief exchange charged at the dog's owner, causing him to run away. Hunter then grabbed Luna, a Chihuahua mix, by the leash and swung her around above his head before slamming her to the ground. The dog owner immediately flagged down a Los Angeles Police Officer and identified Hunter as the attacker. Officers observed Luna having balance problems as a result of the attack and saw her vomit as she tried to get back up.

Hunter was immediately taken into custody and the case was sent to the City Attorney's Office for prosecution. The case was handled by Deputy City Attorney Jina Kim of the Central Trials branch of the City Attorney's Criminal and Special Litigation Branch.

Hunter pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty and was sentenced by Judge Alex Ricciardulli to 36 months probation and 45 days in jail. Hunter was also ordered to attend 24 hours of psychological counseling and to stay 100 yards away from the intersection of Montrose Street and Glendale Boulevard in Echo Park.
