Authorities removed 30 dogs from a mobile home described as filled with animal waste and unfit for habitation by humans or animals.

Animals control officers said the mostly mixed-breed, short-haired dogs were taken Thursday from a mobile home north of Fife Like in Kalkaska County.

One official said it was the worst case of animal neglect shed seen in her two years on the job.  "There was feces on the countertops," said Sandi Feeley, manager of the Kalkaska animal shelter. "The dogs had sores from fighting and from fleas and mites on their faces.

"We wanted to get them out of there as fast as we could for (the resident) and for the dogs," Feeley said.  The dogs were taken to a shelter and were to be evaluated Friday by a veterinarian, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported. The animals appeared to range in age from about 6 months to 9 years old, officials said.

County officials discovered the dogs after acting on a tip. Authorities will turn over evidence to the county prosecutor for possible animal neglect charges.
