A pheasant was rescued by a passer-by from two mindless thugs who were beating it with sticks. The adult male bird, named Fez by staff at the Wood Green Animal Shelter in Lordship Lane, Wood Green, was brought in by the good Samaritan, suffering from a dislocated knee, bruising and shock.

Despite the attack, staff at the centre managed to manoeuvre the joint in Fez's right leg back into place, and the animal is recovering at the centre. Shelter manager Harry Eckman said: "We are not sure if somebody had been raising him to eat and he had escaped, or flown off course. "We are probably going to find somebody who maybe has a small holding somewhere, or possibly a reserve, depending on whether he will need looking after. It really will depend on how well the leg heals."

Mr Eckman blasted the thugs who attacked the defenceless creature. He said: "However long you work in animal welfare it never ceases to surprise you when you hear of another case of animal cruelty and ignorance. You wonder if the message is ever going to get through." Fez will stay at the shelter until being given a new home.
