A $15,000 reward has been posted for information leading to the conviction of people responsible for the shooting deaths of three mustangs in northern Washoe County. The Bureau of Land Management is continuing to investigate shootings in February 2006 of the horses near Leadville, about 40 miles north of Gerlach. The reward was posted by the bureau and by wild horse advocacy groups.

B-L-M law enforcement and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office began investigating after a citizen contacted them on February 14, 2006. Investigators determined all three animals were shot to death earlier that day. Two mares and a stud were found along the remote road. One mare was pregnant and miscarried a foal after being shot. Wild horses and burros are protected under federal law and killing them carries a penalty of up to a year in jail and a two-thousand-dollar fine for each violation.
