A couple accused of leaving dogs, cattle and horses in mud and manure without food and water last month at a Franklin Township farm were arraigned in Lenawee County District Court on misdemeanor charges that could earn them up to 90 days in jail.

Shelly Jean Glisson, 47, and Ralph Edward Garland, 43, pleaded not guilty and were scheduled for pretrial hearings on May 18 on 44 misdemeanor counts each of animal cruelty and improper burial of animals. Glisson also faces 13 unlicensed dog counts. They remain free on personal recognizance bonds.

The charges result from a Lenawee County Sheriff's Department investigation at Glisson's farm south of Loch Erin at 7623 Pentecost Highway.

According to sheriff's department reports, an animal control officer last month found four bulls and three horses inside a barn, knee-deep in manure. Outside, he reported finding 27 dogs on 6-foot chains, living in muddy water 6 to 10 inches deep. Reports said the dogs had no food or clean drinking water.

A seriously ill dog was found chained inside a shed. It was taken to the Lenawee Human Society and later euthanized because of its condition, according to reports.

When an officer returned a few days later on March 20, conditions had not improved, according to sheriff's department officials. Remains of dead cattle and dogs were also found on the property, resulting in 15 counts of improper burial that were filed against Glisson and Garland. State law requires animals within a mile of a residence be buried at least 4 feet deep, according to court documents.

The sheriff's department has investigated animal neglect complaints in the past at Glisson's Pentecost Highway property. An officer reported finding 39 hybrid wolves, two puppies and two coyotes, all without licenses, during an inspection on March 10, 2000, after a complaint was made. The case was later resolved and charges withdrawn.

The unlicensed dogs in the current case are identified as a husky mix breed.
