Agents with the state Animal Welfare Program are awaiting the results of a necropsy that they believe will determine what killed one of three dogs that were slain in a rural Aroostook County town earlier this month.
The three dogs, two wrapped in plastic bags and one wrapped in a garbage bag, were found in a remote area of the town during the past few weeks. One dog, a female Brittany spaniel, was found April 13 wrapped in a garbage bag on a dirt road.
The dog, which investigators believe was a family pet, had suffered severe head trauma.
Dr. Christine Fraser, the veterinarian for the AWP, said one of the animals had been necropsied and results of the necropsy on one of the other animals are expected in a week.
The AWP is not involved in the third case, which was handled by the town, according to Fraser.
The Humane Society of the United States, which strives to promote the protection of all animals both in the United States and abroad, last week posted a reward of up to $2,500 for the arrest and conviction of whoever is behind the gruesome slaying of the dogs in the tiny town west of Caribou.
Fraser said she couldn't comment on the results of the necropsies because the investigation is continuing. She said the dog on which the necropsy is pending suffered "traumatic injury not consistent with being hit by a car" or other such accident. Fraser says she plans to finish her investigation and turn it over to police. References« ME State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Aroostook County, ME
