Acting on a tip from a nearby resident, Anderson County sheriffs authorities seized 13 dogs from an abandoned trailer on CR 4255, west of the Palestine city limits, on the morning of April 24.
The dogs six of which were being kept outside were of various, mixed breeds, according to Jason Chapman, animal control officer for the Anderson County Sheriffs Office.
One dog was deceased, but the remaining 13 appeared to be in fair condition although they have reportedly been receiving only sporadic visits from their caregivers.
Bowls containing water and food were accessible to the dogs living outside.
Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor, however, said the dry dog food was being put out in large quantities and spoiling due to the weather elements.
The dogs have food and water, Taylor said. Theyre not being cared for as they should be.
Chapman said he initially was informed about the neglected animals on April 14 after receiving a complaint from a nearby resident.
After obtaining a warrant from Anderson County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace James Westley, Chapman contacted representatives of the Dallas office of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to assist in the effort.
Following Mondays seizure, the dogs were to be transported to the Dallas area where they will be housed until a hearing set for 2 p.m. on May 5 in Westleys court at the Anderson County Courthouse Annex.
As of late Monday morning, authorities were uncertain about the identity of the dogs owners.
The dilapidated trailer was uninhabited by people.
Chapman was uncertain how long it had been since people have lived at the trailer.
Multiple notices were placed on the trailer by authorities, informing the owners of the date, time, location and nature of next months hearing.
People need to realize its a crime not to care for animals, Taylor said.
Cruelty to animals is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine not to exceed $4,000. References« TX State Animal Cruelty Map
