Nanine Boone, 51, of 208 Denmark Street was arrested on August 9 after Lowndes County Code Enforcement agents and Valdosta Humane Society rescued 42 dogs, 20 birds, seven turtles, mice and a number of cats from her home.

The authorities said the animals weren't beaten they were all suffering from neglect. There wasn't any fresh water and you couldn't step anywheres in the home without stepping in a mess.

A neighbor called and reported a foul odor around a home in the Pendleton and Denmark Avenues area of Highway 41 South.

"Our initial assessment was that there was a lot of debris in the yard area. From the condition of the yard, we couldn't exactly see what was in there." A few of the dogs in the yard have severe cases of the mange or were bald.

A search warrant was secured and humane society volunteers went to the home on about 5:45 p.m. on Thursday. "We found severe health condition problems on and in the property. There were a number of dogs, birds, mice and without food. Most of the dogs were sick. We confiscated all the dogs we could get our hands on Thursday night.

The dogs were removed to the county animal shelter. Most of them were euthanized. Another search warrant and arrest warrant for the tenant of the home were issued Friday charging the resident with cruelty to aniamls. There was difficulty in location the tenant.

Linzey Hannah, owner of Overhead Door Co., who reported the situation said "I've been trying to get something done for years. You can see it, and you can smell it. It got so bad over there, I couldn't walk over there because of the smell."

"Years ago when they moved in the house, the house should have bean condemned then. It's worse than awful."

He said a woman and her three children between the ages of 12 and 16 live in the home.

The home is surrounded by so much overgrowth and debris, it couldn't be seen from the street. "It was like going through a jungle."

Most dogs found in the home were of mixed breeds and mostly small dogs.

If Boone is found guilty, she could serve up to 12 months in jail and pay up to $1,000 for each misdemeanor charge.
