A Mapleton man suspected of shooting a dog on April 2 admitted to killing a stray cat last year, police said.

Roger M. Allen, 33, of 10105 S. Maple St. was arrested on April 4 on charges of cruelty to an animal, aggravated discharge of a firearm, possession of a weapon by a felon and not having a firearm owner's ID card.

Those charges stem from Allen killing the cat on his property in September 2005, Peoria County sheriff's Detective Dave Hoyle said.

"He caught it in a live trap, like for raccoons, and then shot it while it was in the trap," Hoyle said.

Though he confessed to killing the cat, Allen said he did not shoot a yellow Labrador retriever about 3 p.m. on April 2. 2006.

"At this point in the investigation, we don't have any factual proof he killed the dog," sheriff's Capt. David Briggs said. "However, during the investigation, he admitted to earlier killing a cat in the same manner."

The dog was standing in an alley when it was shot once in the neck, owner Debbie Turner said. "The poor thing, it wasn't doing anything wrong."

Allen was released from the Peoria County Jail on a notice to appear in court May 9.
