About 50 cats seized, 48 had to be euthanized Calgary, AB (CA)Incident Date: Tuesday, Oct 31, 2000
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: woman
An unidentified 63-year old woman will appear in court Dec 15 to be charged with leaving animals in distress and and not providing adequate care.
About 50 cats were seized from the owner who lived at 107 Hartford Road N.W., Calgary.
SPCA executive director Cathy Thomas said, "Our goal is for the court to prohibit the woman from owning animals, or to limit her to a maximum of two or three spayed or neutered cats."
The court could impose a maximum number of cats she can keep and the SPCA would have the authority to monitor the situation in the future.
Forty-eight of the seized cats had to be destroyed after they were removed from the dirty, feces-littered home.
When the police forced opened the door of the woman's home, they found her to be suffering "psychological and physical health problems" in a basement room.
Since the time the police found her in the basement she has been in the hospital.
