A substitute teacher at Veterans Park Academy for the Arts was charged with animal cruelty on March 28 after sheriff's deputies found a dog that had been left for hours in her car at the school.

According to Lee County sheriff's reports:

A school resource deputy was on patrol at the school at 49 Homestead Road when the officer saw a dog in a car in the school parking lot.

The deputy tried to get into the car, but the vehicle was locked.

The officer ran the license plate number through the system and got the owner's name, then went into the school to see if the person was there.

Authorities said the owner, Cameron A. Petering, 56, of 916 S.E. 31st Lane, Cape Coral, was a substitute teacher working at the school that Tuesday.

Petering was found and came to the car.

Deputies learned that the dog, a basset named Bailey, had been locked in the vehicle for six hours with no water and minimal ventilation.

Personnel from Lee County Animal Services took Bailey into custody.

Petering was booked into the Lee County Jail on a misdemeanor cruelty to animals charge. The charge carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
