Somebody neglected and abandoned a dog, leaving him tied up outside the Humane Society. Now, the people at the shelter are trying to nurse him back to health. According to officials, the dogs hair was so overgrown and matted, he could barely walk. Dr. Michael Redmer, a veterinarian at the Michigan Humane Society Berman Center for Animal Care, told 7 Action News, "I would estimate that this has been going on for close to a year, maybe longer... This matting extends well past where his extremities end, probably by about a good 6 to 8 inches, and it looks like hes been standing in his own waste."

Mary Seiggreen, the shelter manager, found the dog March 8, 2006 when she got to work. The dog was wearing a collar, and had been left tied to the door handle. According to Seiggreen, "I wasnt sure if it was 2 dogs or 1 dog at the time. As soon as I got closer, I realized it was 1 dog, and brought him in, and set him up and tried to make him a little more comfortable," Shelter workers have named the dog Duncan, and since he was just abandoned, they dont know much about him. They believe he is around 5-years-old, and suspect his is a cockapoo or other poodle mix. Dr. Redmer says this kind of neglect could result in severe skin infections and even death. But according to the doctor, "There is a very good chance that hell make a full recovery from this." Despite the neglect, Dr. Redmer says Duncan has a sweet disposition, and appears to have been well fed.

Duncan was taken to the groomer, to begin the delicate process of getting rid of all that extra hair, so he can get around again. "Were hoping that we can do everything we can to take care of whatever medical conditions there are underlying, and try to find him a good home," The Michigan Humane Society wants to make sure Duncan is healthy before putting him up for adoption, and 7 Action News will keep viewers posted on his progress.
