Donald Irving Wells, 49, was sentenced to a five day jail term on Dec 18, probation for 18 months, his property must be cleaned up to meet Adrian Township ordinances, not to possess any animals during his term of probation, pay a $100 fine, $275 court costs and restitution for veterinary services.

Wells pleaded guilty Oct 27 to a reduced charge of attempted cruelty to animals by abandonment.

When Adrian Township police officer Mark Houser investigated the animal neglect complaint in June at Wells' home on 6465 North Adrian Hwy he said, "It was just kind of a horrible mess."

Officer Houser said he found a dog walking on bloody stumps because it lost three paws, allegedly to frostbite the previous winter.

There were six other dogs in a feces-caked pen which had serious health problems, the dogs were euthanized.

A donkey wasn't able to hardly walk because its untrimmed hooves had curled up and grown about seven inches long.

On Wells' property there were also a large collection of animals that included llamas, feral deer, horses, poultry and goats.

Some of the animals were fine. It seemed Wells had too many animals to care for properly on his own. Houser said, "He had too many for his resources."
