Dr. John Thomas, of Westside Animal Clinic, said that on Feb. 18 an airman who recently moved on base brought a mixed breed long-haired cat to the clinic with the area just above her right carpal, or wrist bone, shattered. When Thomas first looked at the leg, he said, it appeared to have a bad abscess with swelling and dripping pus.

Upon further examination and an X-ray the following Monday, however, he saw the remnants of a pellet in the leg. We had bones coming out of it everywhere, he said, adding that the cat had no blood flow to the foot and it was going to fall off anyway.

On Feb 21, Helenas leg was amputated up to the shoulder, Thomas said, because a cat just doesnt understand that its not supposed to walk on a stump.

Helena is the victim of someone out there with a pellet gun, and Thomas, as well as Helenas owner, want the message to get out that shooting live animals is not a game.

It might wake some parent up to not give a pellet gun to an irresponsible kid, Thomas said. They get all these ... pellet guns and they dont know what theyre doing. If parents could just understand, when you get a kid a pellet gun youre not giving em a toy.
