A retired technical writer acquitted last year of attempting to set fire to his neighbor's La Crescenta home has been indicted on attempted murder charges in connection with a failed arson attempt in 2001.
Gary Glazier, 64, was indicted by a Los Angeles County grand jury this week on three counts of attempted murder in connection with a Feb. 13, 2001, fire on El Caminito Street in La Crescenta. The grand jury also indicted him on one count of stalking another neighbor between 2003 and 2004 and three counts of animal cruelty in 2003.
"I'm very pleased with the court ruling," Deputy District Attorney Susan Schwartz said Tuesday.
Last year, Glazier avoided a possible life sentence after being acquitted of attempted murder stemming from a 2004 fire at the home of Alfred Artsvelyan and his family, who lived next door. The family, who was asleep at the time of the early morning fire on Feb. 22, 2004, managed to escape without being harmed.
The same jury deadlocked on arson, burglary and possession of an incendiary device, charges involving a second fire at the same home on May 13, 2004. The family was not living there during the second fire.
Glazier will be retried on those allegations along with the charges laid out in the grand jury indictment, which was unsealed Monday. Glazier, who has been jailed without bail since his May 13, 2004, arrest, is scheduled to appear in court March 23.
"I've tried the case once before," said Glazier's attorney, Robert Shapiro. "The jury had no problem finding Mr. Glazier not guilty of all the counts of attempted murder, and the jury hung on the case that's being retried, 7-5, in favor of acquittal. We expect a more favorable result this time."
Police arrested Glazier after a hidden video-surveillance system, installed by the Artsvelyan family after the first fire, showed flammable liquid being sprayed from Glazier's property to Artsvelyan's house in the early morning hours, investigators said.
A pole with a glowing tip, extending from Glazier's property, could also be seen in the video. A few minutes later, the tip was seen again with what appeared to be a large flame on it, extended into a crawl space of the victim's home until the house caught fire, police said.
The indictment came out of testimony from the first trial, when the defense team brought up the 2001 arson attempt and tried to blame two neighborhood kids.
The stalking charge occurred against a neighbor between March 1, 2003, and May 13, 2004, the indictment said. The three counts of animal cruelty accuse Glazier of killing a neighborhood pet named Rio, and killing two neighborhood cats whose bodies were found in one neighbor's pool.
