Less than a week after Greenbrier Animal Control took in 40 dogs and six birds that were found confined in a small laundry, most have found homes thanks to thoughtful area residents.

"I appreciate what Animal Control Officer Randy Weaver did, securing the safety of the animals and adopting them into loving environments," said Mayor Billy Wilson.

On Thursday, Feb. 23, a complaint was received by Greenbrier Police Department that animals were being contained in a confined area at 6976 Cemetery Road.

Chief Jeff Pennington and Capt. Stanley Wagner went to the residence and spoke with resident Linda Brown.

Brown gave them consent to search the premises.

Nearing the laundry room, the officers were met with a strong order and a closed door. Opening the door, they found the 40 dogs and six birds in a room measuring 7 feet, 6 inches by 11 feet, 6 inches.

According to the officers, the odor was so strong they could not stay in the room for more than 15 to 30 seconds at a time. Brown was cited for animal cruelty and the animals were taken to the Greenbrier Animal Control Facility.

Once word of the animals' situation was out, residents called to offer homes, said Wilson.

Wilson praised both Pennington and Weaver in their handling of the situation.
