When the Brentwood Fire Department fought a chimney fire at a Ladd Road home on April 19 about 9:00 pm, they found the inside of the home filled with trash, debris, feces and urine from more than 30 cats.

The Cocheco Valley Humane Society normally serves only Strafford County but they were called to assist with the Brentwood emergency.

Sandra Scott-Rainey an animal cruelty with the Cocheco Valley Humane Society said the cat feces in some sections of the attic was a foot deep. Cats were roaming the house through tunnels in the walls and floor.

Many of the staff workers still had sniffles caused by the airborne germs in the home. There were dead cats in the cellar and cats living in feces-filled pens throughout the home.

The elderly woman living in the home will probably not be charged. She appeared to be suffering from emotion problems and is now being assisted by the state. The home has been condemned.

The humane society was not able to rescue all the cats that night. The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also came to the house to help trap the additional cats. The cats are being sheltered at the two agencies.
