Louie, an 18 month old cocker spaniel mix ,returned home after being struck on Oct 10 with a sharp object, perhaps an ax. Louie was hit in the face, shoulders, hip and legs.

A Des Moines woman, Roberta Ficek, 49, has been arrested in a plot to pay someone to hurt the dog. Ficek has been charged with solicitation to commit animal abuse. No other arrests have been made but it the police are investigating a possible suspect.

Ficek, 336 E. Granger Avenue is being held in jail on a $6,500 bond.

Ficek's neighbor, Marie Connett, said she kept the dog chained in her fenced in yard. Connett was surprised to hear about Ficek's arrest. The dog didn't bother anyone. The dog would bark when hungry or when we would get home and he would want attention.

"He has all kinds of stitches on the inside and staples on the outside." Louie lost a lot of blood and the operation to save his life took hours.

Before Louie was adopted from an animal shelter he was hit by a car. He still has a pin in his hip from that accident. Louie's family can't imagine why someone would want to hurt him. The police hope to find out why.
