Five puppies were found frozen to death and a local animal shelter wants to know who is responsible.

According to Bill Hutchison, of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, a woman noticed a box on the side of the road as she walked down West Alameda Street near a transfer station.

"She peaked in the box and sure enough inside were five newborn puppies, probably just a day or two old, that some one had piled into the box and left on the side of the road," Hutchison said.

The temperatures were too low for the puppies to survive.

"The temperatures dropped enough that their bodies couldn't keep themselves warm," Hutchison said.

Hutchison said the puppies looked like a pit bull and Rotwieller mix.

Although they were just hours old, Hutchison said they did their best to survive.

"They crammed themselves all into one corner of the box huddled on top of each other trying to stay warm," Hutchison said.

With single digits temperatures, the puppies died, just minutes away from the Santa Fe shelter.

In the case of animal cruelty, Hutchison wants someone to be held accountable.

"We're offering a $1,000 reward to anyone who has information which will lead to arrest and conviction of whoever left these puppies," Hutchison said.

The shelter said cruelty of this kind could be deemed a 4th degree felony in New Mexico.
