A dispute between a Wahiawa landlord and his tenant took a violent turn on Jan 29, 2006. The 51-year-old landlord is accused of killing his tenant's dog after the dog bit him. Police say the dog bite was not serious.
A plastic kennel sits empty in the front yard of a home on Nakula Street. Police say a man broke into his tenant's unit Sunday and shot her dog dead.
Officers arrested Kenneth Hood, 51, on suspicion of first-degree burglary and animal cruelty. He's the landlord of the multi-unit property and lives across the driveway from the victim.
Hours before the deadly shooting, investigators say the tenant's pit bull bit the landlord's hand. The landlord allegedly armed himself with a rifle, entered the 19-year-old woman's unit when no one was home and opened fire on the dog.
Another neighbor said she was surprised to hear about the violent incident. She describes the suspect as a kind and hard-working man.
It appears this wasn't the first run-in between the landlord and his tenant. Court records indicate Hood filed a civil complaint against the woman three weeks ago. The matter is pending.
Hood remains locked up at H.P.D.'s main cellblock. Charges are pending.
Case UpdatesA Wahiawa man who allegedly broke into his tenant's apartment and shot and killed her dog was charged January 31, 2006 with three felonies and one count of cruelty to animals.
A police affidavit states Kenneth W. Hood allegedly confessed to a neighbor that he broke into Jenna Day's Wahiawa home and shot her dog Boo Boo with a rifle. Hood was charged with first-degree burglary, possession of a prohibited firearm, use of a firearm to commit a separate felony, as well as cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor. Police said the pit bull terrier bit Hood earlier that day, but that the bite was not serious and he refused treatment from ambulance personnel. According to a police affidavit, Hood broke into Day's apartment at 1760 Nakula St. sometime after she left at 12:30 p.m.. A neighbor, Lawrence Dwelly, told police he saw Hood coming out of Day's apartment about 5:30 p.m. and that when Dwelly confronted Hood about it, Hood allegedly replied that he "shot the dog," the police affidavit said.
Dwelly told Hood's wife, Sheila Ann, that Hood had confessed to him about shooting Day's dog. She went inside the home at 1764 Nakula St., retrieved a rifle and ammunition and gave them to Dwelly, the affidavit said. The affidavit states Dwelly checked a garbage can near the apartment and found Day's dog dead under a blanket. When Day returned home about 7:15 p.m., she found Boo Boo's body inside the garbage can, wrapped in a blanket she owned, the affidavit said. Day also found a pool of blood on the floor and some blood on the window of a spare bedroom, the affidavit said. She also found a pillow and quilt on the grass outside her home. Police said Day had left the dog locked inside the apartment and that it appeared the front door had been forced open and there was blood on it. | Source: Star Bulletin - February 1, 2006 Update posted on Feb 18, 2006 - 7:03AM |
