RSPCA inspectors are trying to find the owners of a dog found chained to a tree and left to die south of Brisbane on Jan 23, 2006. Spokesman Michael Beatty says the cocker spaniel was malnourished and dehydrated after several days in bushland at Browns Plains.

He says the dog had previously been well cared for, possibly indicating that the owners were not responsible for the mistreatment.

Mr Beatty says anyone found guilty of animal cruelty could be fined up to $75,000 or be jailed for two years.

"They had just sentenced that dog to die and made sure it would die by bolting the chain to the tree and making sure it couldn't slip out of the collar," he said.
