A case of animal cruelty in Yucca Valley is now in the hands of the district attorney's office. A tip led deputies to 24-year-old Starlene Doss. She's the woman who owned puppies found abandoned inside a house. She was under the influence of methamphetamines at the time of her arrest.
The eight puppies were found malnourished under a piece of plywood. Animal control officers tried to rescue the animals last week, but they had to be put to sleep.
Doss was cited and released. The animal cruelty case against her has been handed to the district attorneys' office.
Case UpdatesThe San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office is considering whether to officially charge Doss, who they believe owned nine severely malnourished dogs found by officials earlier this month, with animal cruelty.
On Jan. 14, San Bernardino sheriff's deputies investigating a 911 call from 3633 Goleta Ave. in Yucca Valley discovered that the house was abandoned.
The call was blamed on a faulty phone wire that sent an automatic alert to 911, Sheriff's Deputy Tom Boyles said Monday.
While looking around the structure, deputies checked underneath a pile of boards and found the dogs, Boyles said.
"It was one of the worst things I've come across," he said, adding that the mother dog died soon after responding deputies found her puppies.
"It was almost like she held on long enough to make sure her puppies would be cared for," he said.
But the puppies were so underfed that they couldn't be saved and had to be put down, officials said.
On Saturday, tips from citizens helped lead investigators to a home in the 55-700 block of Pueblo Trail in Yucca Valley, where they discovered Starlene Doss, who is believed to be the dogs' owner, according to a news release from the sheriff's department.
Doss was initially arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of methamphetamine, officials said, but due to a medical condition, she was released and cited.
Officials said the district attorney's office may file animal cruelty charges against Doss at a later time. The investigation is ongoing. | Source: The Desert Sun - Jan 26, 2006 Update posted on Jan 26, 2006 - 10:21PM |
