On January 12, 2006, police said what started out as a stolen vehicle investigation let them to uncover what they believe was a training ground for fighting dogs. Police photographed scars on a pair of Bessemer pit bulls. Police said the scars are the result of fierce pit fighting. In fact, one of the dogs had a fresh wound on its front left leg.

"While the officers were here, they discovered a few dogs in the back that had scars like they had been used in dog fights," said Bessemer police Sgt. Hank Edwards. The dogs were kept chained up in a fenced-in back yard. The two pit bulls were confiscated by the animal rescue group Tears.

No one has been charged, but Terra Contromano, who works with Tears, said the dogs' wounds indicated they were trained for fighting.
