Dog fatally shot for sniffing
Tucson, AZ (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Jan 7, 2002
County: Pima

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Trinidad F Moraga, Jr

Trinidad F. Moraga Jr has been charged after allegedly shooting dead a dog because it sniffed him in the street- he is accused of shooting the dog in the head. It had trotted up to him and sniffed him, say witnesses.

He is charged with animal cruelty and disorderly conduct and being held in custody in Tucson, Arizona.  Witnesses told police the dog, a young shepherd mix named "Big Ears," walked up to Moraga and sniffed him as the man walked down the street.

He responded by pulling out a .40-calibre handgun and shooting the dog in the forehead, witnesses say. The dog died instantly.

Moraga, a labourer, continued walking down the street, witnesses say, and officers arrested him about two hours later. Two witnesses identified him, and he was interviewed and taken to jail, the report says.

The dog's owner told authorities she'd let her pet outside just moments before she heard the gunshot. She went outside to find the animal in the street, bleeding.

Moraga Jr., 21, is also being held for drug charges.
