A 48-year-old DeRidder was recently arrested for simple cruelty to animals after he shot his neighbor's dog.

On Dec. 10, 2005, at approximately 2 p.m. the Beauregard Parish Sheriff Department received a call from a resident on American Legion Road stating that his dog had just been shot. A deputy went to the complainant's residence and learned that the complainant was outside when he heard a gunshot and say a man who lives next door lowering a gun from his shoulder. As the man went back into the house he heard his dog yelping. The complainant found his dog and took it to the vet where the dog later died.

After completing the investigation a warrant was obtained for Lonnie R. Craig, 48, of DeRidder. He was charged with simple cruelty to animals after he was identified as the person who shot the dog. On Dec. 28, 2005, Craig was arrested at his residence and booked into the BPSO Jail where he remains pending the posting of a $4,000 bond. Investigating officer was Deputy Roger Hennington.

On Dec. 28, 2005, deputies went to 486 American Legion Road to arrest Lonnie R. Craig on a warrant for simple cruelty to animals. Upon arrival at this residence Jermaine L. Washington, also an occupant of this residence attempted to block deputies as they were in the process of arresting Craig. Deputies warned Washington that he would be arrested if he continued to interfere in the arrest of Craig. Washington refused to comply and he was arrested for resisting an officer. Washington was booked into the BPSO Jail and remains there pending the setting of a $750 bond.

Investigating officers were Deputies M.H. Cooley and Phillip Webb.
