A Frederick County man is facing charges in a July 2005 fatal shooting of two sheep at a farm on Apples Church Road in Thurmont.

Nicholas Whetzel, 23, of Sabillasville faces two counts of aggravated animal cruelty. According to charging documents, Whetzel and a friend were on a trip to shoot groundhogs when Whetzel shot twice at the sheep with a .22-caliber rifle. The friend gave the account to animal control investigators.

A ewe was killed, and a yearling was wounded so badly that it had to be euthanized

Case Updates

A 23-year-old Sabillasville man received six years in prison for the shootings of two sheep in July as they grazed in a field along Apples Church Road. Frederick County Circuit Court Judge G. Edward Dwyer Jr. suspended all but 18 months of the sentence for the felony animal cruelty charges.

Once released from the Frederick County Adult Detention Center, Nicholas Warren Whetzel will be on three years of supervised probation with several conditions. Should he violate probation, he could be sent to prison to serve the remaining 4 1/2 years.
