A 14-year-old South Toledo boy pleaded innocent yesterday in Lucas County Juvenile Court after he was accused of setting his grandfather's dog on fire. The Jones Junior High student was released on community control after a detention hearing on misdemeanor animal cruelty. Police said he charred the dog's hair and caused redness and blisters on its back skin.

The crime, which occurred around noon on December 12, 2005, is one of three animal cruelty cases involving dogs in Toledo the last few weeks.

In this week's case, a friend of the teen's grandfather was visiting the family on Walbridge Avenue and called 911 when she saw the boy set the mixed-breed dog on fire in the kitchen. She thought he poured a liquid onto the dog and set it ablaze, police said. Officers didn't find a liquid, but saw several burnt matches on the kitchen floor. The grandfather said the boy, who was home from school sick, had left. Police found him upstairs.
