Louisiana State Troopers, working on a tip from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Department and the Humane Society, picked up 30 to 40 pit bulls on Dec 7 from a home on Walnut Road near Beau Chene High School.

A suspect, believed to be connected to a dog fighting and breeding operation was picked up late in the afternoon.

The dogs, which ranged in age from puppies to older dogs, are being held for evidence in Opelousas. After the investigation is complete, they may be euthanized.

Case Updates

The district attorney's office has given the go-ahead to euthanize 50 fighting pit bulls. Shelter workers say there is good reason the dogs are still around. Dolly Hollford says the fates of all 50 fighting pit bulls are grim. Because they are unadoptable, every last one is scheduled to be euthanized, but the process of getting there is slow and is preventing the shelter from operating normally. Hollford says the shelter is backed up on calls. She says right now workers can only handle emergencies. Hollford says the solution is clear...put the dogs to sleep. However, the animal shelter does not want to act too soon and jeopardize the criminal case against the dog's suspected owner and trainer.

Which is why on January 17, 2006, a veterinarian was brought in to document and verify allegations that these dogs were in fact used for fighting. Hollford says that includes marking all of the scars and things of that sort. Hollford says the process is taking a lot longer than she would like, but for good reason. She says the department wants to make sure all of the (t)s are crossed and (i)s dotted.

Hollford says from examinations, it has been determined all of the dogs, or most of them, were fighting dogs. She says if they are not fighting dogs, then they were bred to fight. She says there are puppies from the group that are vicious with other animals.

If convicted, Pettet faces fines and jail time. According to the St. Landry Parish Clerk of Court's office, no court date has yet been set.

Parish officials say Pettet is now being given the chance to pay bond on the dogs, which would extend their lives in the shelter until after her trial is finished. If bond is not paid by next week, the dogs will be euthanized.

A woman charged with alleged cruelty to animals, dog fighting and drug charges bonded out of jail Thursday afternoon. State Police and St. Landry Parish officers arrested 62-year-old Allison Petet at her Arnaudville home on Wednesday.

In addition to the charges of dog fighting and cruelty to animals, Petet also faces charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Investigators said the scars on the 48 pit bulls prove the owner used them to fight. Detectives also seized training equipment they say Petet used to make her dogs stronger and more powerful for the fights.

"St. Landry Parish lately seems to be the place that we're having the most success in combating dog fighting, but hopefully this sends a message to those involved in dog fighting, we don't consider this to be a sport," Trooper Willie Williams said.

Petet posted a $23,000 bond on Thursday. The pit bulls -- 34 adults and 16 puppies -- authorities say Petet bred to fight could be euthanized in less than three weeks.
