On Oct 26, 2004, 18 year old Kendall Tealer was cited for cruelty to animals for reportedly failing to take 4 pit bull puppies to the veterinarian. The puppies were severely malnourished, and their ears appeared to have suffered a "home crop job". The largest of the puppies weighed only 4.5 pounds, and the smallest weighed 2.6 pounds.

The case began when Tealer was at Bruce Vawser's house and witnessed Vawser fighting his dog on 3 separate occasions. Tealer bred his female to Vawser's male dog, and after the puppies were born, Vawser refused to give them to Tealer. Tealer then took the dogs from Vawser, prompting Vawser to file a police report. When police questioned Tealer about the puppies, Tealer revealed the fact that he had witnessed Vawser engaging in dog-fighting, which resulted in Vawser's arrest.

Tealer was found guilty of cruelty to animals and served 30 days in jail.

Tealer had a history of petty crime. Police said Tealer was first jailed at the age of 16 for obstructing justice, and later arrests included driving without a license and property damage. Tealer was killed in late November 2005 while he and another man attempted to rob Benson Jewelry and Loan at gunpoint. The owner of the store shot Tealer, killing him. The other man involved in the robbery was injured.

Tealer's death leaves investigators unsure if the county attorney will have enough evidence to move forward with the case against Vawser.
