On May 17, 2004, Jeffrey Scott Anderson, 48, was arrested for family violence battery, his son charged with animal cruelty in what investigators believe was an act of revenge.
While Anderson was incarcerated, he spoke with his son, telling him to shoot the woman's dog in the head.

Newman said the son stated his father told him the dog was vicious, and if it got loose it would hurt someone or something.

The dog's owner and neighbors both stated the dog, a male pit bull, was not vicious. While the dog was restrained by a cable fastened to a tree, he was shot to death.

In a statement made by a Sgt A. Newton on May 17, 2004, he stated that "While in the front office, I overheard Mr. Anderson yell something about a gun. I went to his cell area and Mr. Anderson was telling his son to take the gun and shoot the dog in the head."

Jeremy Anderson made a statement to Animal Control that he had shot the dog after his father told him to do so.

Animal Control seized one puppy from the property "for it's own safety".

A warrant for animal cruelty was taken out on Jeremy Anderson, a Fannin County High School senior, on May 18. 2004. At the request of the boy's mother, Sheriff George Ensley agreed to hold the warrant until after the high school graduation ceremony on May 21, 2004.
Jeremy Anderson turned himself in to the jail on May 20, and was released later that day on a $1000.00 bond. The older Anderson was released May 19, 2004 on a $2500.00 bond.
