Puppies beaten to death with pipe Lorain, OH (US)Incident Date: Thursday, May 9, 2002 County: Lorain
Disposition: Failed to Appear
Person of Interest: 12 year old boy
A 12-year-old Lorain boy was arrested after admitting he beat two mixed-breed puppies to death with a pipe. Police said that the boy showed no remorse and dumped the pups in a neighbor's back yard. According to officials, the boy beat the puppies because his mother told him he couldn't keep the dogs at their Lorain home.
Dr. Lisa Hoffman, a veterinarian at the Lorain Animal Clinic, described how the two believed-to-be happy, healthy dogs were killed. "The dogs had been hit several times in the head, probably once or twice on each leg and several times over the back," she said. Hoffman examined both of the beaten dogs and pointed out that one of the puppies suffered extreme skull fractures, and both dogs had broken limbs after being hit repeatedly with a piece of pipe.
The boy could face animal cruelty charges at the very least, according to officials. Ortiz said that she doesn't know why her son would do this. She said that he will be grounded for the rest of the summer and will have to go to counseling. The boy has already received a preliminary evaluation by doctors from Community Health Partners. He has not yet been formally charged, as prosecutors are evaluating the brutality of the case.
Prosecutors said that the boy skipped his first court appearance. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is keeping a close eye on the case to make sure the 12-year-old doesn't beat any other animals. The boy is scheduled to be in juvenile court on June 11 References« OH State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Lorain County, OH
