A 62-year-old Prescott Valley man who took his 5-month-old puppy to an animal clinic has been arrested and accused of breaking one of the animal's hind legs.
Yavapai County Sheriff's officials say Garvin VanDyke brought his Siberian Husky "Monte" to the clinic and told the veterinarian he injured the dog by flipping him to the ground. VanDyke apparently was trying to hold down the puppy to bite him on the neck as a way of discipline, according to sheriff's spokesman Scott Reed.
The vet discovered that Monte had suffered a severe break to the left femur bone.
The clinic contacted authoities after an animal surgeon determined that the broken bone was caused by a sharp, hard stike - inconsistent with what the owner had told them, Reed said.
VanDyke told sheriff's investigators that he was trying to "establish domination" over the puppy and to punish it for chasing cars.
He was arrested and booked on a felony charge of animal cruelty and later released on a $2,500 bond. Monte has been placed in the custody of the sheriff's office. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
