The motive for the crime remains a mystery, but Peoria police have accused a Phoenix man of killing a lost dog. Officer say that Mia, a Great Dane mix, was wandering in the street in mid-October when several motorists stopped and tried to corral the animal.

That's when a man driving a Honda Accord drove up onto the sidewalk, struck and killed the dog, then drove back onto the street and sped away, police spokesman Jay Davies said.

David Nathan Bouchard, 26, was taken into custody Saturday, Oct 15, a day after the incident near 107th and Peoria avenues.

Bouchard was booked into a Maricopa County jail on a felony charge of animal cruelty. Bail was set at $2,880 bail pending a court hearing the following Monday.

Davies said police were led to Mia's owner, a Peoria woman, because of a flier she had circulated for the missing dog.
