A pet shop owner accused of animal neglect made a court appearance on Oct 18, and city code enforcers paid a visit to her home. Millie Clark, owner of The Pet Barn in Terre Haute, made a quick exit from City Court that morning.

She was formally charged with animal neglect and her case was continued to December 2nd.

The judge ruled she could still keep animals currently in her possession, but only if she allows visits from the city Environmental Protection Department.

That afternoon, code enforcers received another formal complaint stating Clark had too many animals in her home, which is next door to the Pet Barn. Officers posted a notice on her door and say they`ll keep trying to contact her.

Case Updates

Millie Clark, the owner of The Pet Barn, admits tossing a dead puppy out with the trash. A local pet shop owner answered to two charges of animal neglect in city court on Oct 19, pleading not guilty.

Before she left, local media caught up Clark. Here is what she had to say to Action 10's Melissa Andrews:

Andrews: "Did you hurt those puppies?"
Clark: "Hurt them? Oh no! No!"
Andrews: "Was there a dead puppy in the dumpster?"
Clark:"...I don't know what to say."
Andrews: "Did police find a dead puppy in the dumpster?"
Clark:"Yes, yes."
Andrews: "How did it get in there? Do you know?"
Clark: "Yeah, I put it there."
Andrews: "You did? Why did you put it in the dumpster?"
Clark: "That's how we were told to dispose of dead animals."
Andrews: "How did it die?"
Clark: "I shouldn't be talking about this because I really don't know. I don't know."
Andrews: "Are you going to close your business?"
Clark: "I'm already in the process of closing my business."

Clark is facing a stack of charges related to animal care at The Pet Barn, let's break it down for you.

Most recently, she's charged with two counts of animal neglect. That's on top of one count of cruelty to animals, one count of a general animal care violation, and one count of a nuisance violation.

The latest neglect charges are for the dead puppy and a puppy taken from the store and found to have a respiratory infection.

Clark is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct 21, and faces large fines and possible jail time if she's convicted.

During Tuesday's hearing, a prosecutor asked that Clark not be allowed to have animals in her care. Her attorney argued and a judge ruled that she can keep animals in her possession.

Action 10 News has learned Clark is also being investigated for animals she keeps at another Vigo County property. Clark owns a property on Jeffers Street in Riley, Indiana.

The Vigo County sheriff's department tells us they've received complaints about the poor health of dogs there as well. Animal control officer Ron Shaw tells us he's been unable to contact Clark.

The Vigo County building inspector did take her to court a few weeks ago for high weeds and maintaining a health nuisance.
