A Douglas County horse breeder sentenced for animal neglect last summer is in trouble again. Authorities raided Ken Soll's property on Oct 13.

In September, Soll was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to pay the Humane Society more than $5,000 for vet bills and boarding. That followed the discovery of neglected horses on his property in February.

One horse had to be put down and Humane Society officials say it was one of the worst cases of horse neglect in the Omaha area.

On Oct 13, the Humane Society and Douglas County Sheriff's deputies returned to Soll's property and couldn't believe what they found.

The Humane Society's Mark Langan says, "We now find a dog living with no food or water, no shelter whatsoever; dead and live chickens in the same cage after he was ordered by the judge not to possess any animals besides one dog. So we're going seize these animals, issue an arrest warrant for Mr. Soll and charge him again with more counts of animal cruelty."

Langan says probation and a fine did not work in this case and maybe, now Soll will face a more stringent penalty for neglecting animals.

Langan says, "We're gonna do our best to let the judge know what happened here so maybe the best place for Mr. Sol is a jail cell rather than being here at home."

Neglected and abused animals were once again taken away from the Soll property. A judge will decide what happens to the seized animals.

Soll pleaded guilty to two counts of neglect last month. In exchange, 13 other charges against him were dropped.

Kenneth Soll was scheduled to appear in court this morning (12/14/2006), for violation of probation, (prohibiting him to possess any animals) Kenneth Soll failed to appear for that court case today, so the judge canceled the probation on Kenneth Soll, and issued a warrant for his arrest, which, when he is captured, he will serve no less than 90 days in jail.

A 68-year-old Omaha man cannot own any animals after pleading no contest on Feb 2, 2006 to a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty. Ken Soll was ordered to serve a year of probation for failing to care for a flock of chickens found at his home, 6815 Northern Hills Drive.

Soll already was on two years' probation in connection with an incident involving two horses and four dogs.

The terms of probation in that case allowed Soll to have one animal. But when authorities checked his property late last year to see if he was in compliance, they found a border collie without food and shelter and 12 chickens, one of which was dead.

Douglas County Judge Edna Atkins told Soll on Feb 2 that he can't have any animals on his property and ordered him to pay a $175 fine. The border collie has been adopted, and the chickens that survived were placed on a farm.

Soll also is supposed to pay about $6,000 to the Nebraska Humane Society for veterinary costs incurred while authorities tried - without success - to save one of the horses involved in the earlier case. He hasn't met that obligation, so Atkins directed him to begin making payments.
