A Torrington man faces cruelty charges following accusations he threw his pet chinchilla from the porch of his apartment. Raymond Tellier told police he inadvertently dropped the rodent's cage on top of the chinchilla on Monday.

The pet, which resembles a guinea pig, died. But another chinchilla inside the cage survived.

Neighbors who called police said that Tellier threw the animal from his porch after it got loose, then walked outside the apartment to check on it. Police said that he slammed the animal to the ground. Tellier posted $5,000 bond. He promised to return the surviving chinchilla to a pet shop.
